Good morning so I went from a compacted base layer which was not letting sit through to now struggling to get my HotBin to run bellow 60 degrees Celsius. I had taken the lower part of the base layer out added bulking agent and paper / cardboard and mixed in. I also used a bamboo pole to push down to create chimneys to pull the air back through from the base. I then added a first lawn cut and now it is all Cooking away between 65 and 75 degrees Celsius for over a week. Is this okay or is it just killing off all the bacteria? I have fully opened the top vent but that has not reduced the temperature as advised by HotBin. Many thanks

Sounds ok to me,
My bin has been running hot (60-75C) on first few lawn cuts for a week as well. I just add more cardboard into the grass to slow it down a bit and prevent the ammonia smell you can get from grass. -
Most folks would love to get their Hotbins running this hot. Its what you need to kill all the pathogens and seeds and its perfect if you have a lot of material you want to get rid off. Its also great if you have food waste like fish, chicken carcasses etc. you want to compost.Originally posted by Michael1138 View PostComment

Thank you. Also I have had a load of dead maggots coming out with the leachate when I open the cap. I don’t know when they got in but wonder whether they have burrowed down to get away from the heat. What do you think ?Comment

I think they have either moved down to avoid the heat or they have hatched before there was enough leachate to drown them. I would think its more the heat. Another poster had the same issue with worm and worms don't like the heat. I managed to get 75 degrees the other day in my bin. I really didn't think it was possible to get that high, but it appears it is.Comment
