  • Using straw

I am awaiting delivery of my hotbin and looking forward to 'firing it up' for the first time

I have recently taken delivery of a fragile item that came packed in a large amount of fresh straw. It occurred to me that this would make a useful composting material.

I am a little unclear whether this would be classified as bulking agent or used in the same way as shredded paper

    Can someone advise?

I’m using straw in place of paper and card, another product I use is a by product of the pet food industry, wool. My daughter gets her dog food delivered which is wrapped in wool blankets 3’x 1’ x3/4” thick cut into 1” squares.

Yes, straw is great for composting. I use it in addition to paper and cardboard. I do cut the straw up a little though as I find it can mat and cause layers if it's not chopped up a little.
