Hello, the advice on starting the bin up is to put a layer of small twigs in the base first and this does seem to help. However when you remove compost from the bottom of the bin those twigs get pulled out and it can be tricky to replace them before the content above collapses. If you put material in that has fine particles like soil or sawdust then this may cause problems. Once in a while its good to empty whole bin and clean baseplate, after 9 months of use I did this and found that some of the holes were blocked although bin still reaching good temperatures. Good luck

    Blocked air holes

How can I prevent the air holes at the bottom of the bin becoming blocked and thereby stopping air circulating ?
