I have noticed small white insects in the leachate and am concerned if I use it I might be passing them on to my plants. Is this normal or is there a problem?

Small flies and other critters often breed in the leachate area. I doubt they will do any harm. If you have any doubts, drain your leachate off into a sturdy container and add a little boiling water. That will kill off anything and your leachate should be safe to use once its cool

Thank you HotBinadjinn. Do you have any idea why the leachate can be kept for only 2weeks please? If diluted 10-1 it lasts ages.

SpookyJohn2 I wasn't aware it could only be kept for 2 weeks - I do use mine quite quickly, especially in the summer. Do you have a source for that info? If that is the case, I would imagine that it might get stinky over a period of time. Perhaps its a good medium for nasty bacteria. I know when I tap off the leachate its more or less odourless, but i've kept it long enough to become a little smelly with a little froth on top like a good stout - can't say I know how long I kept it for.

HotBinDjinn I read that keeping it for no more than 2 weeks is on the HotBin website. I was puzzled as if it is diluted 1:10 ratio as recommended it should keep longer than that.
